David Meyer says:
Debunking the sanctity of motherhood, fatherhood, the armed forces, true love, marriage and the will of the community, Sturges creates a nonstop anarchy of wit, pace and style..
I say:
The subject matter must have been pretty risque back in the 1940's but the plot hurtles along with no time to stop and consider the implications. The morning after a drunken party for troops departing to fight in Europe, Trudy (Hutton) discovers herself married, and pregnant, with no idea about who or how. With the help of her younger sister, and childhood sweetheart (Bracken), they try to solve the problem of how Bracken can marry Hutton without being found out as a bigamist. Lots of fast talking, plot twists, and slapstick and generally a lot of fun, but a rather lame way of manufacturing a happy ending. Interesting that not being married is depicted as being the social stigma, the pregnancy is hardly mentioned.
